When stepping into the tub stops being safe

For most seniors, the first sign that a bathroom isn’t working anymore isn’t dramatic. It’s a missed step. A close call. A hand reaching for a towel bar that wasn’t built to hold weight. Then, eventually, a fall.

The numbers are sobering: 80% of bathroom falls in seniors happen getting in or out of the tub. One in four adults aged 65+ falls each year — and a single fall can mean a hospital stay, a hip fracture, or worse: losing the ability to live independently at home.

Most families assume the only options are:

  • Rip out the entire bathtub and install a walk-in tub ($5,000–$15,000, 2–3 days of work, sometimes more)
  • A full bathroom renovation ($15,000+)
  • Move to assisted living

There’s a fourth option that almost nobody knows about: a bathtub cutout conversion.

What a bathtub cutout does

A bathtub cutout is exactly what it sounds like — we cut a section out of your existing bathtub wall, making the step-in height drop from roughly 16–22 inches down to about 5–7 inches. Then we seal the cut edge with a custom-fitted, professional-grade insert that matches your tub. The result: a step-in shower you can walk into safely, without removing your tub.

What stays the same:

  • Your existing bathtub
  • Your existing tiles, plumbing, and bathroom layout
  • Your home’s resale value — a full bathtub stays restorable anytime with the optional removable door cap

What changes:

  • The step-over height drops from 16–22″ down to 5–7″
  • You can add stainless steel grab bars in seconds during the same install
  • You stop fearing the bathroom

The whole process takes about 4 hours

Most of our senior customers are showering again within a day. Here’s how:

1. We take measurements (free, no obligation). A quick look at your tub, confirm the cutout shape works, and answer questions. We can also do this from photos — text or email pictures of your bathtub and we’ll quote you the same day. (Text: 289-809-5379 • Email: info@trenworks.com • WhatsApp: 905-436-5965)

2. We install the cutout (1 day). We carefully cut the section out of your tub wall, treat the edges, reinforce and bond the custom insert. We add grab bars on the spot if you want them (one 18″ and one 24″ stainless set is the standard senior package).

3. You shower the next day or evening. After 24 hours curing, you can use your new step-in shower the next afternoon or next evening, depending on the insert’s cure time.

Optional Removable Door Cap — Step-In Shower OR Full Bathtub, Your Choice

You don’t have to give up your bathtub. Our optional removable door cap snaps over the step cutout in 2 seconds, restoring your tub to a full bathtub whenever you want one.

Cap off → safe step-in shower for daily use. Low threshold to step over, no climbing, no fear of slipping.

Cap on → full deep bathtub for a relaxing soak, bathing grandchildren, or hosting overnight guests.

Removable bathtub door cap with thumb-latches installed

The door cap installs with two simple thumb-latches. No power tools, no plumbing changes, no second renovation. A watertight seal lets you fill the tub to comfortable bathing depth.

Full bathtub bath with door cap installed for soaking

Why this matters for seniors:

  • Independence on your terms — daily safety AND the occasional soak when you want one
  • Family-friendly — grandkids visiting? Cap on. Daily routine? Cap off.
  • Preserves resale value — when the time comes to sell or pass the home on, future owners still have a working bathtub
  • No permanent commitment — accessibility today, full bathing function whenever you want it
  • Aesthetic finish — clean, custom-fit white panel matches your tub seamlessly

Frequently asked questions

Will this affect my home’s resale value?
No — and if anything, it can help. A cutout conversion makes your bathroom accessible to more potential buyers (including other seniors). And if a future owner prefers the original tub configuration, the optional removable door cap option restores full bathtub function anytime.

Is it really safe? Will it hold up?
Yes. We use professional-grade cutting tools, fully bond the insert, and seal every edge. Our cutouts are designed to handle daily showering for the long term. We also offer a 5-year workmanship warranty.

Can I still take a bath?
Yes — with the optional removable door cap. Cap off, the tub is a safe step-in shower for everyday use; cap on, it seals to bathing depth for a full soak. Many senior customers use the step-in shower day-to-day and add the door cap only when they want a bath.

Do you do grab bar installation only (without the cutout)?
Yes. We install stainless steel grab bars on their own — pricing depends on your wall type and materials (tile, substrate, anchor requirements), so just call or text for an assessment based on your bathroom.

What if my tub is fiberglass / acrylic / steel / cast iron?
We work with all common tub materials. Cast iron tubs take longer to cut (specialized blades) so pricing may be slightly higher, but it’s still possible.

How quickly can you do the install?
Usually within 1–2 weeks. Most installations are completed in 3 to 4 hours. We schedule by the day, not by the hour, so you don’t have to wait around.

Do you have references in my city?
Almost certainly yes. We’ve done installs across central Ontario, the GTA and Niagara region. Ask us when you call and we’ll share recent installs nearby.

Will my insurance or extended health benefits cover this?
Some private extended health plans cover home accessibility modifications under occupational therapy / aging-in-place riders. OHIP does not. We provide an itemized invoice if you want to submit to insurance.
